Falling in love with Koh Samui, Hans and his wife decided to leave their country to settle on this little island… Villa Chocolat was born out of the couple’s passion. The colonial style tearoom is located in a quiet area of Hua Thanon; it is the perfect place to be for a leisurely afternoon, with fragrant coffee and decadent sweets. There is also a dance school that teaches ballet and jazz dance for adults and kids (4 years old and above). Samui-Villa.com team got in touch with Hans, the man behind this lovely place, to know more about him and Villa Chocolat.

Could you give us a short intro about yourself and Villa Chocolat?

For my wife and myself, living in Koh Samui was really like a dream. We fell in love with the island 25 years ago and we came back regularly on holiday, today we can say that our dream came true.

What is Villa Chocolat about?

My wife started a dance school and I opened a tearoom with homemade chocolate desserts.

Why do you combine chocolate and dance?

It is easy to understand when you know that my wife was a ballerina before she opened her own dance school in Brussels. Dance is all her life. It was normal for her to start ballet classes even if it can look like an ‘’atypical activity’’ on this island.

On my side, it was not so easy. In another life, I was an actor…of course, when I came in Samui, I already knew that  I couldn’t practice my job anymore and then, I had the idea to develop one of my favourite passion which is ‘’chocolate’’…and since I am Belgian, it was an evidence to do it with Belgian chocolate.

What are the challenges and what have you learned overcoming them?

The challenges are really big because it is not only a question of business which is working well or not, above all it is more a question of lifestyle. When you leave your country and everything behind, it is very important to make sure you made the right choice…this, in my opinion, is the ‘’biggest challenge.’’

What is the most fulfilling part of your life?

Enjoy life with my family like a long holiday.

What is the most fulfilling part of your business in Samui?

To see the happiness in the eyes of my customers when they are eating my desserts and cleaning their plate ‘’like little kids’’ until the last piece of chocolate.

What is the next step on your journey?

I would like to start chocolate workshops and give more information about the unknown side of that wonderful product.

A piece of advice to your 20-year-old self?

To be happy in your life…do what you like and what you feel.

Any words you live by?

Be free! Be honest with yourself…and the other people too, of course!

  • There is one more 100% vegan place on Koh Samui (in Lamai area, just in 120 meters from Lamai Veggie which is the last one in this listing) — Yoga House & Spa (http://house-yoga.com/en/vegan-cafe). It is inside the yoga studio, just opened (July 2016), is cozy & nicely decorated, offers (mostly) European dishes & desserts from Monday to Saturday (11 AM — 7 PM).

  • Thank you! Such articles are very useful. Would be twice great if you can add some info about Yoga House to your article… ;-) Photos and details are available by the link I've provided (or I can answer any questions you have).

  • Koh Samui photographers are really amazing photographers. They make the moment memorable for the rest of our life. Recently I attend my friend's marriage party, it was beautifully designed and maintained until the end. Thanks to Magic Day Co. Ltd Wedding planner to make her marriage memorable.

  • Awesome article and such helpful information. Thank you so much for the topics and the content. It helps a lot, after I was hopping around the beaches on Samui. My favorite one was the naturism beach in the north. A small bay, only us and coconut trees. Oh, i really over the place. But now I am back in Canada and saving money for my next trip in 2 months. Last time I passed the chance to do my diving license on Koh Tao. That is what I need to do this year. If somebody has any suggestions, I will be very happy. Unfortunately, on the last day, I had booked a nice boat cruise tour from Samui to Koh Phangan, for a very fair price, and with excellent service. I saw too late, that this brilliant company https://kohsamui.tours offers all tours and activities like diving or jet ski safari around Samui Archipel. I start already to study a bit for my next stay and looking for your next blog posts. Have a good time and thanks for all.

    Your Jason S.

  • Thank you very much for these extraordinary helpful articles, great pictures and advertised tours. Based on your information, we decided to take a guided boat tour through the Koh Samui archipelago. With https://kohsamui.tours we found a very cheap boat tour that we can really recommend. From the pick up to the food and the tour guide everything was sensational. We surprised, that everything was running so smoothly and comfortably. We never expect that Thailand has so much beautiful nature to offer that it is truly incredible. We are looking forward to further articles from you and read with great interest. Best regards and stay healthy.
